Lives Changed on the Last Day of VBS

Day 7

Today was our last day of VBS at Chumani and our last VBS of the whole week. We got a later start to our morning than we had originally planned, but we are on Kenya time so all was good. We had eight sessions with a break in the middle for tea. It has been a long but fulfilling week, and the exhaustion started to set in. These kids deserve everything so whether we were tired, exhausted, or emotionally overwhelmed, that had to be put aside.

I helped lead the music. It was my favorite thing to hear the children sing back to us the songs they had just learned the day before. They are pretty fast learners. At the end of each session, if time allowed, we would ask them to sing a song for us to learn. What a blessing it was to be worshiping and singing together with them.

After VBS we got some free time to hangout with all of the children before heading to our home visit. The home visits at Chumani are a little different than the home visits we did at Bondeni. The children’s homes could be miles from the school and most all of them live in little villages. While their houses may be “nicer” than those in the slums, they still lack the resources and opportunities to be able to live a sustainable life. We got to go to one of our team members sponsored child’s home. There were four families that lived together in this village. Some go to school and some don’t, some work and some can’t find work, and some go to church and some don’t. While we were there we got to experience two family members give their life to Christ. The Holy Spirit was there with us as always. Watching the way they put their faith in God with what little they have has challenged me. It’s the faith that doesn’t depend on everything going right and still trusts God anyways.
